Lean Linux Distros – Squeeze Every Last Drop of Performance Out of Your Computer

peng

Do you have an older computer? Maybe you just don’t need fancy animations and pretty interfaces and want to squeeze last drop of speed and performance out of your computer hardware? You’ve come to the right place. I made a list of high performance lightweight linux distros especially for this.

I love linux as it’s faster, more reliable, stable, secure, free, and open when comparing it to Windows and Mac. I didn’t like how some distros are becoming slow or sluggish due to their unnecessary fancy interface, animations and preloaded bloat. I went in search of leaner alternatives.

I wanted something different than your typical Gnome or KDE desktop environments. I wanted something faster, leaner, and newer. I became partial to XFCE and LXDE, but there are many other great alternatives too. Here is what I’ve found. If you have any to add to this list, please comment about them down below.

A reader has also suggested to use kernels with specific patches for your architecture with a more optimized CPU and drive scheduler that will be faster than running the generic included kernel. Here is a list of links containing downloads and more information regarding this subject.

  1. No bodhi linux in the list? Doesn’t get much lighter than elementary on top of ubuntu 14.04. Their 3.0 release is dropping in febuary but Release Candidate 2 is available and you can run the livecd to see how it performs on your hardware.

Here are a couple of other lightweight Linux distributions that I’ve had great experiences with.
Peach OSI – The “Bare Bones” version is tiny and fast and has most of the functionality of XUbuntu, plus some nice features like Whisker Menu.
4MLinux – Has customized versions for various uses, such as gaming.

Thanks for the two suggestions. I will look into them and possibly add them to the main list.

      You ever try http://lxle.net ?

It’s supposed to be just like Lubuntu but with a few improvements.
